Education and Job Description
The anesthesiologist assistant program is commonly referred to as AA and these programs last for 2 years. To be eligible for AA programs students must have a 4 year bachelor's degree, preferably with majors in chemistry or biology.
Once you are enrolled in an AA program, the course will include study of anatomy, physiology and anesthesia. Course material will also include extensive pharmacology and biology topics related to anesthetics and effects of human cells and tissue. The course will be very extensive and the students will also be given practical training under clinical settings. You can earn professional certification by giving an exam administered by the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistant (NCCAA).
An anesthesiologist assistant work profile is similar to the anesthesiologist job description, assistants will have to take patients medical history and administer anesthesia. The assistant work with the anesthesiologist and monitor the vital signs of the patients when they are under the effects of anesthesia. They also play a major role in pain management after the surgical procedure is complete and if the patient experiences any discomfort. Anesthesiologist assistants monitor vital signs like breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, etc. Like most medical assistants they also perform follow up exams and diagnostic tests to check the patients physical condition.
